A Zippered Bible Bound in Fake Leather

Found in Scott Russell Sanders’ A Private History of Awe (pp. 110-111)

The edges of the onionskin pages
were dyed a startling red,
the color of lipstick worn
by racy girls at school.

I couldn’t help thinking of those girls
when I drew the zipper
and the Bible sprang open
like a mouth.
